So, we had a presidential election and the Electors appear to be committed to Donald J Trump as our next President Elect. How did this happen? Well, we let it happen by choice, neglect or through a regrettable act of hubris. We could not conceive of any other winner than Hilary Clinton. Lots of people, white working men for sure, but lots of folks found his bullying braggadocio refreshing. Oh, that rascal!
Why do so many believe his promises of salvaged jobs and national pride? Because after eight years of so-called, "failed Obama promises" they need to believe in a new Great White Hope who can get things done. I do believe in change I do believe in change, I do, I do, I do!
Seriously, though I see Mr. Trump''s ascension to power as a barometer of how frustrated and demoralized many of the electorate have become over the years. I'm not speaking solely of the let's shake things up white folks, I'm also indicting those thoughtful individuals who just couldn't put Hilary Clinton's shortcomings aside. Donald Trump has never been interested in governing.
Hilary Clinton may not be a warm, fuzzy, hop on the couch snuggle bunny, but she understands how this country works and its place as leader of the free world. Donald Trump does not. What he does understand is his need to be admired and the primacy of his brand. He is the consummate master of sleights, the great con artist, the grifter par excellence.
What is there left for us to do in the face of this far right onslaught?
I suggest we practice articulating the word, "NO".
No, to gutted health insurance, tax savings accounts, underserved public schools, the scam of vouchers, unregulated banks, low wage job stagnation, fantasies of instant economic growth and the notion that civility is weakness or politically correct.
No. We will not surrender our freedom to the re-militarization of our police in the name of "Law and Order".
No. We will not muzzle our outrage at rounding up undocumented immigrants, continual anti Semitism or making Muslims the new niggahs while the old ones continue to be shot and marginalized day after day, week after week.
No. We will not relent in our denouncement of attacks on peaceful coexistence in our ethnically diverse communities.
No. We will no longer confuse our economic self interests with race bating tactics of fear and suspicion.
So, there you have it. The gauntlet is on the floor!
